Frequently Asked Questions Who is eligible? Who is eligible?All applications for coverage are subject to underwriting. Our policies are available to US residents for dogs 8 weeks and older, and cats 10 weeks and older.How does the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan work?We reimburse you for the covered cost of veterinary care for illness, injury or accidents. You can use any veterinarian you choose and pay for the services as normal. The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan reimburses you directly for the cost of covered services, less the deductible and co-insurance.Does my pet have to be purebred and/or registered?No - The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan is available to all dogs and cats that meet the underwriting criteria. We cover pets that are pure breeds, mixed breeds, registered or unregistered.Can I take my pet to any vet?Yes - you can take your pet to any licensed veterinarian in the United States or Canada.Is there a Deductible or any Co-Insurance?Yes - The deductible and co-insurance amounts are listed on the benefit comparison chart by policy. Once you have met the deductible, the Plan pays the co-insurance percentage of allowable charges up to the policy maximum payable amounts. The Policy may have a per-incident or annual deductible, and the benefits chart will show the deductible frequency.How do I file a claim?It is simple. Pay for the visit at the time you receive services. Take a claim form with you to the Vet's office and have your Veterinarian fill out Section 2 of the claim form, you fill out the rest of the form and send it into us via mail, email or fax along with a copy of the itemized invoice. We will process your claim and send an EOB (explanation of benefits) to you along with any reimbursement you are due within 15 days of receipt of all necessary paperwork.Does my premium increase as my pet gets older?Your premium is based on the plan benefits you select and where you live. Premiums increase at renewal based on age, only after your pet's 12th birthday. However, premiums may change for other reasons at renewal. Please contact us if you have any questions.Are there surcharges for different breeds?No - the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan rates all breeds the same.Will my pet's insurance be cancelled when they get older?No - We want to protect your pet through a long and happy life. However, premium surcharges relating to the age of the pet will apply.Do you cover vaccinations?Yes - Preventative care such as physical exams, vaccinations and boosters, dental cleaning etc. is regarded as routine treatment and is only covered under the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan if you select one of our Wellness plans.Do you cover spaying or neutering?Yes - The Wellness Plus Plan allows elective coverage for spay and neuter.What is covered?The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan helps cover veterinary services for allowable accidents, illnesses or injuries, including surgery, hospitalization, prescriptions, diagnostic and laboratory tests, X-Rays, CT scans, MRIs, and cancer. The Wellness options add additional coverage for preventive treatments such as vaccinations and boosters, an annual check-up, elective spay/neuter, heartworm testing, heartworm prevention, flea and tick control, parasite control, annual dental cleaning and other preventive measures.For full details, please see our Policies Terms & Conditions. What is not covered?Our policies contain certain restrictions on coverage - no insurance policy will be able to cover everything, so we hope you will read your terms and conditions closely. Who Underwrites the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan?The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan is underwritten by Markel Insurance Company, rated "A Excellent" by A.M. Best Company. It is available to all US residents.When do my benefits start?Coverage for accidents, injuries and preventative coverage (if included in selected plan) is available on day 1 of coverage. Illness coverage begins on a new plan 30 days after your effective date. |
